Safety, Health And Environment

She Policy | Safety Rules to Live By| Values and standards

Occupational Health and Safety
The health and safety of our employees is extremely important to us.

Our approach is based on risk assessment with appropriate resources being allocated to manage the risk. Our occupational health service varies from full-time (in-house) occupational health clinics to part-time clinics run by contracted service providers.

All employees are offered medical examinations based on the specific risks to which they are exposed in the workplace and a close watch is kept for the signs of any potential occupational disease.

HIV/AIDS
Mondi recognises that HIV/AIDS is the greatest threat to South African Society in the present time. Our policy is based on respect for human rights, absolute avoidance of unfair discrimination and caring for our employees and our communities. We are providing access to antiretroviral therapy for all employees through the network of service providers around the country.

Safety
The safety of people at all MPSA sites is of utmost importance and a culture that values safety is therefore actively promoted. A high level of safety awareness is maintained by ongoing communication through all levels of the organisation. The actions of people are governed by relevant safety standards, rules and work procedures while behavioral compliance is monitored through regular audits. The responsibility for ensuring the safety of employees rests with line management backed by competent supportive safety staff. However, ultimately all persons are responsible for their own safety and MPSA therefore ensures that every employee receives safety training relevant to the position and circumstance in which they will be required to work. Every person is also subjected to effective on the job training, skills development and a competence test to ensure they can perform their duties safely and effectively. An environment is thus created in which people can and want to work safely.

Health
At MPSA we believe that health is a basic requirement to enjoy a good life. This is why we monitor the health of all our employees and provide medical assistance to them through full time (in house) occupational health clinics and part time clinics run by contracted service providers. Free testing for HIV/Aids at these facilities allows all employees to know their status and receive treatment through the programmes made available to them.
An employee wellbeing programme is also available through an external service provider to assist employees in addressing personal problems which could be detrimental to their family environment or the converse.

Environment
The management of MPSA is committed to responsible sustainable development. Whilst striving to generate optimum returns on investment for our shareholders, we continually review the design and management of our processes to reduce the impact on our environment. This is done at all major operations by regular monitoring of air and water quality against set targets. To foster a culture of continual improvement, the targets are reviewed on an annual basis. Some of our operations generate significant volumes of waste and sound control measures are maintained to ensure legal compliance. All MPSA divisions, barring our new acquisitions, are ISO 14001 compliant which shows our commitment to limit activities and incidents which could have an adverse environmental impact. The principle of reuse, recover and recycle is also applied wherever possible and some of our operations are industry leaders in the reuse of waste material and water recycling.

Quality
We at MPSA acknowledge that customer satisfaction is essential for our existence and although this is dependent on numerous factors such as good communication, timeous delivery, service support, competitive pricing etc. we believe that the supply of a good consistent quality product is a basic requirement. To meet this requirement the quality of the products produced at the various MPSA operations is controlled by compliance with strict procedures and specifications. This compliance is monitored by regular audits carried out by both internal and external auditors according to the ISO 9001 quality assurance system.
