The 2009 Gold Pack Awards

At the 2009 Gold Pack Awards held on Tuesday, 20 October 2009 at Emperor`s Palace, Johannesburg, Mondi Packaging South Africa won six awards!  We are proud of this achievement and would like to congratulate those divisions within the group who won the following awards:

Mondipak Western Cape - Mondi lay-flat divider - Innovative Corrugated Packaging Trophy and Gold Medal
The Mondi lay-flat divider is a truly innovative design that provides excellent protection while stacking bottles flat in layers.  The judges noted that the easy-folding, corrugated divider takes the shape of the bottles, providing stacking strength and allowing for the use of a lighter-weight outer carton.  They applauded the use of less packaging material and resultant cost reductions.


Mondipak Plastics Atlantis - Polyfilla squeeze pack - Consumer Convenience Trophy and Gold Medal
This pack is easy-to-use with its cleverly designed multi-functional closure.  Unlike other industrial tubes that require a gun or applicator, the easy squeeze pack ensures simple operation that requires just two small cuts to get started.  The judges praised the flat "T" that simplifies handling and doubles up as a display hanger.
 
Mondipak Plastics Atlantis - Sta-Sof-Fro bottle - Gold Medal
Without deviating from the basic silhouette of the original Boston round bottle, a recess has been re-engineered into the side of this bottle`s body to create a new dynamic surface which allows a sleek look plus two innovative features.  This first is a surface that can be embossed with branding and the second is a grip feature that was previously missing.  The judges applauded this innovation for not breaking ranks with the tried and trusted Boston round shape and its efficiency on existing filling equipment.

 
Mondi Plastic Containers - Nestable pallet with perimeter base clip - Innovative Trophy, Logistics Trophy and Gold Medal
The judges commended this lightweight, robust two-piece plastic pallet for use in the food and wine industry. The nestable pallet has an additional perimeter base clip that can be clipped in to provide extra strength.  Its FDA approved polyethylene outer skin is impervious to liquids and easy to clean, making the bin a hygienic, bacteria-free way to transport products especially for exports.  This returnable system coupled to the bin`s long life span contribute to an excellent logistics system and rapid return on investment.

 
Mondi Packaging Overboard - Coca Cola Play four-pack self-erecting wraparound sleeve - Gold Medal
This protective outer pack with its secure pilfer-proof feature also allows consumers to see the sparkle in the can.  This bright and refreshing pack is directly flexo printed, eliminating the costs of litho lamination.  The four-pack is lightweight and easy to carry.  The judges noted that the pack is completely recyclable for reuse in the manufacture of cartonboard products.

 
Mondipak Plastics Wadeville - 500ml Glaceau PET Hot Fill bottle - Gold Medal
This pack meets the challenge of manufacturing a PET bottle for a preservative-free beverage that is hot-filled at 85 degrees C yet has a 4 week shelf life prior to filling.  This was found through a combination of clever bottle design with a reinforced neck finish and an affordable heat-reset bottle blowing system.  An additive blended into the PET resin during injection moulding provides UV protection for the light-sensitive product.  In addition the judges noted the bottle`s `chocolate bar` ribs that support the wraparound label.
